Meditation can be considered as one of the simplest things we can do to heal ourselves. And the benefits of meditation are definitely unquestionable. For the next few weeks, I will discuss the physiological benefits of meditation.

The end goal of meditation is to achieve deep rest.  Deep rest is measured by decreased metabolic rate, lowered heart rate, and reduced work load of the heart. Once we are in deep rest, the chemicals in our bodies respond immediately and we reap the amazing effects of meditation. Here are some immediate benefits you will experience:

  • Lower levels of cortisol and lactate-two chemicals associated with stress. Cortisol, known as the stress hormone can alter the immune system responses and suppress the digestive system. Lactic acid on the other hand, increases blood pressure and changes pH level of blood plasma
  • Reduction of free radicals. These are unstable oxygen molecules that can cause tissue damage.
  • Improved blood pressure.
  • Higher skin resistance. Low skin resistance is said to be connected with higher stress and anxiety levels.
  • Drop in cholesterol levels. High cholesterol is primarily associated with cardiovascular disease.
  • Improved flow of air to the lungs resulting in easier breathing.  This is very helpful to those suffering from asthma
  • Slows down the aging process. Meditation promotes good brain function and slows down possible causes of brain damage.

I hope you find this informative and of course, I wish that you practice deep meditation in order to free your life from stress.
